The Assembly has unanimously adopted a motion on fire fighting services in Murang’a county noting that the fire department is inadequately equipped to mitigate occurrences of fire disasters. During its sitting held on July 4, 2023, Members recommended that the fire fighting unit renovates all existing fire stations and equips them fully, they also added that the Kangema sub station be operationalised in addition to construction of 5 new fire stations to ensure that every sub county has a fire station.
During its enquiry, the Committee on Youth, Gender, Culture and Social Services noted that the fire fighting department has only 3 operational firefighting stations. It further noted that many of the fire stations need to be renovated.
Fire fighting is a devolved function and forms part of the major strategies in disaster and risk management.
