Hon. Johnson Mukuha has been elected as the 2nd Speaker of the County Assembly.
The Speaker was overwhelmingly voted in an election where 46 MCAs participated, Hon. Mukuha garnered 40 votes against his only opponent Stephen Macharia who got six votes.The clerk of the assembly Kuria Thuita who presided over the exercise said six people picked nomination papers but only four returned the papers before Sunday, September 18.Two of those who returned the papers failed to meet the necessary requirements to contest for the speaker’s position leaving Mukuha and Macharia to fight it out for the position.Hon. Mukuha will take over from Hon. Nduati Kariuki who has served as speaker of the assembly for two terms after being first elected in 2013.After MCAs were sworn in, the clerk announced that Ithiru MCA, Hon. Francis Kibe will be the leader of majority and will be deputized by Hon. Liz Muthoni who represents people of Kinyona ward.The third assembly will consist of 35 elected and 12 nominated MCAs. One slot for nomination is yet to be filled.In his maiden speech, Hon. Mukuha said he will work with all leaders and ensure the assembly delivers in its responsibilities without favoritism.The newly elected speaker lauded his predecessor for his commitment to the Assembly saying Kariuki achieved a lot in terms of legislation.He is an architect by profession with 24 years of experience serving as a parton of Association of Construction. He holds great wealth of experience in project financing, project management and has great foresight in spotting opportunities out of challenges.
